The $8,000 credit is available to First Time homebuyers only. That includes anyone that hasn't owned a home in the past 3 years.        The amount is 10% of the purchase price or $8,000, whichever is less. The purchase MUST be made by December 1, 2009. The credit will not have to be repaid. Taxpayers can claim the credit on their 2008 or 2009 tax return. This will only apply to a principal residence. The credit would be recaptured if the home is sold within 3 years of purchase. Income limitations apply.
